When I first stepped into Beads of Courage volunteer center I couldn't shake off the connection I felt to the Swiftie community. As we packed beads and shared stories, I thought about the beautiful friendship bracelets, complete with colorful beads, that Swifties make and share with one another. Each bracelet is a symbol of love, friendship, and the special connections we share as fans of Taylor Swift. This simple use of beads creates an invisible string between Swifties and Beads of Courage, an organization that channels the power of beads to make a difference in the life of a hospitalized child.

Children who are courageously battling serious illness, whether that be pediatric cancer, congenital heart disease, or burn trauma, are given a colorful bead for every procedure they undergo. For instance, a red bead represents a blood transfusion, while a yellow bead signifies a night in the hospital away from the comforts of home. These beads are gifted to the children by their medical team, giving the nurses a chance to provided much needed emotional support during treatment. Beads of Courage kids string their beads together, much like Swifties string friendship bracelets, culminating in a colorful story of courage, resiliency, and strength.

The Swiftie community is more than just a fanbase – they're a force for good. I've seen time and time again how their creativity and compassion can make a meaningful impact on the world.
